# Before You Begin: What You Need to Set Up MinimalPad

> MinimalPad does not include a USB-C cable or battery. Check what you need before you start — including browser requirements for Studio.

Before you plug in your MinimalPad for the first time, make sure you have everything the box doesn't include. A missing USB-C data cable or an unsupported browser are the most common reasons first-time setups stall — this page covers all of them so you're ready to go.

## What's not in the box

### USB-C data cable

<Warning>
  A USB-C **data** cable is required and is **not included** in the box. A charge-only cable will not work for connecting to MinimalPad Studio or for flashing firmware — it carries power but no data signal. If Studio can't detect your MinimalPad, a charge-only cable is the most common cause.
</Warning>

Most USB-C cables sold for phone charging are charge-only. Look for a cable explicitly labelled as a data cable, or use one you know works for data transfer with other devices (such as a cable that came with a phone, laptop, or USB hub).

### Battery (wireless operation only)

<Warning>
  A battery is required for wireless operation and is **not included**. MinimalPad can run on USB power alone for wired use, but you need a battery to use it over Bluetooth or to use it untethered.
</Warning>

You need a **3.7V LiPo battery with a JST connector**. This is the standard connector type used in most nRF52840-based wireless keyboards.

Before purchasing a battery, check the [MinimalPad product website](https://www.minimalmacropad.com/) for the required:

* Voltage (3.7V LiPo)
* Connector type and pitch (JST)
* Connector polarity — **verify polarity before connecting**; reversing polarity can damage the controller
* Recommended physical dimensions so the battery fits inside the case

Battery capacity is up to you. ZMK's power consumption is very low, so even a small battery provides substantial runtime. A 300–500mAh battery balances size and runtime well for most users; smaller batteries (110–250mAh) minimise bulk, while larger ones (600mAh+) maximise time between charges.

<Tip>
  Lithium batteries are regulated by shipping carriers, which is why they aren't bundled with MinimalPad. Sourcing one locally is usually quick — search for "3.7V LiPo JST keyboard battery" and you'll find plenty of compatible options.
</Tip>

## Browser requirements

MinimalPad Studio uses the Web Serial API (for USB) and the Web Bluetooth API (for BLE configuration). These APIs are only available in Chromium-based browsers.

| Browser | USB (Web Serial) | Bluetooth (Web Bluetooth) |
| ---------- | ---------------- | ------------------------- |
| **Chrome** | ✅ Supported      | ✅ Supported               |
| **Edge**   | ✅ Supported      | ✅ Supported               |
| Firefox    | ❌ Not supported  | ❌ Not supported           |
| Safari     | ❌ Not supported  | ❌ Not supported           |

Use Chrome or Edge. No browser extension or plugin is required — Studio runs entirely in the browser tab.

<Note>
  Web Bluetooth support can vary by operating system even within Chrome and Edge. If the Bluetooth connection option doesn't work reliably in Studio, connect via USB instead — USB is the more reliable path for configuration and works on all supported platforms.
</Note>

## Operating system

MinimalPad works on macOS, Windows, and Linux. No drivers are required. Once connected, it appears as a standard USB or Bluetooth keyboard on all three platforms.
