# Troubleshoot MinimalPad Firmware Flashing Problems

> Resolve common firmware flashing issues on MinimalPad, including bootloader drive not appearing and the device not responding after flashing.

Flashing MinimalPad firmware is straightforward — double-click reset, drag the UF2 file onto the bootloader drive, done. A few things can get in the way, though. Find your situation in the sections below.

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The bootloader drive does not appear after double-clicking reset">
    * **Check your USB-C cable.** Charge-only cables will not work. Use a data-capable USB-C cable — one you know carries data, such as a cable that came with a phone or a labeled USB 2.0/3.x cable.
    * **Try a different USB port.** Avoid hubs — connect directly to your computer. Try a different port on the machine itself.
    * **Vary the double-click speed.** The bootloader entry requires two presses of the reset button in quick succession, but not too fast. Try a slightly slower or faster double-click rhythm.
    * **Check whether the device appears as a serial port instead.** If MinimalPad shows up as a normal serial device but not as a storage drive, you are running firmware rather than the bootloader. Double-click reset while the cable is connected and the device is powered on.
    * **Try triple-clicking or holding the reset button.** Some NRF52840 clones have slightly different bootloader entry behaviour. If double-clicking consistently fails, try three quick clicks or holding the button for two seconds.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The bootloader drive appears but disappears immediately after copying the UF2">
    This is expected behaviour and means the flash was successful. When you copy a UF2 file onto the bootloader drive, the controller validates and writes the firmware, then automatically restarts and unmounts the drive. Wait a few seconds — the MinimalPad will reboot into the new firmware on its own. No further action is needed.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The device restarts but behaves incorrectly after flashing">
    * Confirm you flashed **`minimalpad_with_studio`**. Other firmware, such as an older build without ZMK Studio, doesn't work with either configurator.
    * Download the firmware again as described in [Update the firmware](/firmware/update), enter the bootloader by double-clicking reset, and copy the file onto the drive.
    * Flashing keeps the key changes you saved. If a key does something unexpected, check it in your configurator.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The lights stay off after an update">
    Turn them on once. On the default keymap, hold the bottom-right key to open the **Connections & LEDs** layer, then press the encoder.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A computer doesn't reconnect over Bluetooth after an update">
    Flashing keeps the pad's Bluetooth pairings, but some computers don't reconnect cleanly after a firmware update. If that happens, follow [Bluetooth problems](/help/bluetooth) to pair the pad again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Controller differences — bootloader drive name">
    The name of the bootloader drive depends on which controller your MinimalPad uses:

    * **Nice!Nano V2** — the drive appears as `NICENANO`.
    * **Generic NRF52840 clone** — the drive name may differ. After double-clicking reset, look for a new removable storage device that appears in your file manager or Finder. The UF2 copy procedure is identical regardless of the drive name.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Safe retry procedure if a flash attempt fails or the device seems stuck">
    If the device appears frozen, the drive did not appear, or something else went wrong mid-flash:

    1. Unplug the MinimalPad from USB.
    2. Wait at least 10 seconds.
    3. Plug it back in.
    4. Double-click the reset button to enter the bootloader.
    5. Copy the UF2 file onto the drive again.

    Repeating this process is safe. The bootloader is stored in protected memory and cannot be overwritten by a UF2 flash.
